2015 Icon Award

In recognition of her lifelong commitment to speaking out about injustices and advancing women, in 2017 Lawyers Club presented the Icon Award to Professor Anita Hill.

Professor Anita Hill

Anita Hill has led a momentous career as an attorney, professor, and women’s and civil rights advocate. Her work has demystified our understanding of women’s status in modern society, and she continues to have an active role in advancing women’s rights in both the legal profession and society at large.

Hill had humble beginnings as the youngest of 13 children on an Oklahoma farm. She worked hard and eventually earned her law degree from Yale Law in 1980. Hill was thrown into the public spotlight in 1991, when she testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearings for then-U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, with whom Hill had worked at the Department of Education and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Following that experience, she became a vocal advocate of women’s rights in the workplace and the advancement of racial and gender equality. Her choice to stand up and speak out inspired many women to take a more active role in politics to further these goals, leading journalists to unofficially dub 1992 as “The Year of Women.”

Hill spent the majority of her time since as a Professor of Law, Social Policy, and Women’s Studies at Brandeis University, where she has served as senior advisor to the school’s provost and interim chair of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program. Furthermore, she has lectured to hundreds of business, professional, academic, and civic organizations around the world about how to make campuses and workplaces more fair and equitable, and frequently advises on class action cases involving workplace discrimination. She is a prolific writer whose work has been featured in Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and Ms. Magazine, and is a frequent guest on nationally televised programs including Good Morning America, The Today Show, The Daily Show, Larry King Live, The Tavis Smiley Show, and Meet the Press .

Lawyers Club is honored to present Hill with its Icon Award for her trailblazing work fighting against sexual harassment and advancing the status of women. Hill’s work epitomizes the mission of Lawyers Club, and her tireless work to promote gender justice will leave a lasting legacy for generations of women.
