California Women Lawyers Liasion
Lawyers Club is a voting "affiliate" of CWL, which has 900 members. To be a voting affiliate, 20% of its members must belong to CWL. As an affiliate, we have a right to have one of our members to be on CWL's Board, and Anna Jauregui was appointed to that position by the president of Lawyers Club for a three-year term. We must qualify (in membership and dues) to be a voting affiliate every year. The CWL Board has over 30 members from all over the state, including regional and affiliate governors. Another Lawyers Club member, Candace Carroll, is our regional governor, and Janice is the affiliate governor. It lobbies in Sacramento for and against legislation, which is one of its main functions. The CWL Legislative Committee is very active, and the Gray Davis has appointed a special liaison to get input from CWL before he takes a position on legislation. CWL Board members must join at least one committee, take part in attracting members to CWL, in fundraising efforts, in Board meetings all over the state, in helping with bench/bar receptions and other receptions, in submitting newsletter articles, in evaluations of judicial candidates, and in any other assignments from the Board. To learn more information about CWL, please contact the chair listed below or directly at the CWL website

Community Outreach and Special Projects
The Community Outreach Committee (COC) is active in striving to improve the lives and status of women and children in San Diego through hands-on projects. It has both ongoing and special projects to provide a long lasting impact on the lives of local women and children. For example, it oversees the Partnership in Education with Central Elementary School including twice a year Read-Ins where volunteers are recruited to read, interact, promote literacy and serve as role models to the underprivileged K-4 children. The COC recently worked on a special project profiling 50 women in history for the Girls Club of San Diego.

Other past special projects have included: building an outdoor play-therapy area for child victims of domestic violence so that their mothers could receive services such as counseling and legal help; creating an inspirational outdoor Literacy Garden for the children at Central so that they have a place to read, tutor and do homework in an artistic setting; and creating a library and improving living conditions for pregnant teens at Sisters by Choice which was a safe haven for young women fleeing and recovering from gangs, drugs and prostitution. Many of the COC projects have received media attention, both locally and nationally.

Mentor/Mentee Program
Some law students have a clear idea of the area of law that they are ultimately interested in, while most are hoping to learn about the practice of law through this introduction to the San Diego legal community. Lawyers Club mentors are pleased to meet a student or recent graduate and share some of their experiences. The program is only as demanding as each pair of mentors and mentees choose to make it, but has consisted of a first-time meeting for lunch or coffee followed by occasional meetings and primarily correspondence by phone or email. It is valuable for the mentee to have someone to whom they can direct questions about classes, job search, etc. New pairings will be made October 2007 and February 2008 for the current academic year.

Newsletter Committee
Lawyers Club publishes an excellent newsletter each month (except August). Lawyers Club News is loaded with articles about past and future events, and other useful information for members. It is mailed the first week of each month to all current members and is posted on our website. The Newsletter Committee (the Editorial Board of Lawyers Club News) consists of the Editor, the Executive Director, and LC members who meet quarterly to define the "vision" and philosophy of the newsletter and to plan future issues. They solicit, write and edit articles, coordinate the production and mailing of the newsletter, and identify new topics for coverage in future issues. The deadline for articles and advertisements in each issue is the first of the previous month (i.e., September 1 for the October issue). Articles should be emailed as Word or WP attachments to news@lawyersclubsandiego.com. Proposals for articles should also be presented to the editor, who may be reached at this same address.
