Community Outreach Committee
The Community Outreach Committee (COC) actively strives to improve the lives and status of women and children in San Diego through hands-on projects. It has both ongoing and special projects to provide a long lasting impact on the lives of local women and children. In addition to special projects, the COC oversees the Lawyers Club Partnership in Education with Central Elementary School which includes organizing Read-Ins twice a year where volunteers read, interact, promote literacy and serve as role models to underprivileged K-5 children.
The Community Outreach Committee is pleased to unveil our new project: The Shakti Rising Garden Project. Shakti Rising is a social change organization, transforming the lives of women, girls, and the larger community. Shakti Rising utilizes a holistic model to empower and transform females who are in recovery for various types of addictions or traumas, encouraging the use of the transformation as a catalyst for positive change in their families and communities. Shakti Rising is committed to sustainability, using their garden daily as a metaphor for personal healing and growth in the women’s recovery. Shakti has outgrown the current garden space and seeks expansion into a currently unused patio area, so that it can use the space as an outdoor, edible classroom and meeting space.
In order to create Shakti Rising’s vision, we are in need of donations, both monetary and labor. If you are a green thumb or enjoyed volunteering for our last project and would be interested in volunteering your time again, please contact Megan Johnson at johnsoml@tjsl.edu. If you would like to make a donation, please send checks to the following address: 4285 Asher St., #57, San Diego, California 92110, addressed to Megan Johnson.
