Centennial Celebration of Women's Suffrage

19th Amendment Then and Now

And ain't I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man - when I could get it - and bear the lash as well! And ain't I a woman? – Sojourner Truth in 1851

Today at dawn, I joined the live virtual event of Monumental Women, the organization that led the movement to include the first women statues in Central Park located in New York City. Until today all the statutes in Central Park, 23 in all, honored only men. The historic unveiling today honors the women’s rights pioneers that fought the valiant fight for women’s right to vote: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Sojourner Truth.

This historical unveiling is in concert with our celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the adoption of the 19th amendment to the United States Constitution. Indeed, it is a very special day to be a Lawyers Club member. One hundred years later, the fight for women’s equality continues because gender parity still has not been achieved. Lawyers Club is committed to advancing the status of women in the law and society, and we will not rest until it is achieved and preserved for centuries to come.

We hope you enjoy this Lawyers Club Centennial Special Edition made possible because of the wonderful collaboration of many for you—our members and sponsors. My deepest gratitude to Megan Walker, past Vice President and current Centennial Celebration Coalition Liaison, Elaine Lawrence, Executive Director, Ivy Kosmides, Director of Programming, Ashley Carbonell, Administrative Coordinator and Jodi Cleesattle, past Vice President and current Press Liaison, a truly exceptional team! I hope you are inspired by our video of our members sharing what voting means to them and reading Lawyers Club’s Op-Ed published today in the San Diego Union-Tribune print and digital newspaper.

In solidarity,
