At the May 16, 2012 Annual Dinner, we presented the Belva Lockwood Award to Elaine Alexander.

2012 Professor C. Hough Friedman

C. Hugh Friedman truly exemplifies these principles. His commitment to equality is reflected in one of his first contributions to Lawyers Club, that of its name. In 1972, Friedman came up with the name "Lawyers Club"; a name that embodies the organization's commitment to equality, one open to all people committed to fair treatment under the law regardless of sex.

Mr. Friedman has continued to work to improve the status of women and advocating for equality. Currently a professor of law at USD, Mr. Friedman has been a member of Lawyers Club since its inception, served on the SDCBA Board of Directors from 1966-1969 and 1972-1976 and as its President in 1976. He is also past President of the Legal Aid Society of San Diego and the California State Board of Education.

A review of Mr. Friedman's accomplishments reveals a long and distinguished career. After receiving his A.B. from Yale and his J.D. from Stanford Law School, Professor Friedman began his legal career in 1956 as a California Deputy Attorney General. In 1958, he moved to San Diego and worked both as in-house corporate counsel and as a professor at USD School of Law. He later practiced business law and was a senior partner with Friedman, Kahan, Dysart & Frasier. In 1972, he married Hon. Lynn Schenk. He received his L.L.D. in 1976 from USD and became a full time professor at USD in 1977, where he teaches business planning, corporations, and securities. His publications include the California Practice Guide for Corporations. He was appointed by President Clinton to the White House Conference on Small Business Commission. He also serves as a member of the California Air Resources Board. He has been a visiting professor and has lectured in several countries. He frequently gives presentations on corporate governance issues to state and local bar associations and law firms, and testifies as a qualified expert in State and Federal Court litigation.
