At the May 12, 2015 Annual Dinner, we presented the Community Service Award to Tracy Skaddan.

2015 Danielle Hickman

We are honored to present the 2015 Community Service Award to Danielle Hickman, a Deputy District Attorney and a former Lawyers Club Board member whose inspiration and long-standing commitment to public service derives from her grandparents, who were themselves engaged in lifelong community service. After earning her Juris Doctor from Pepperdine University School of Law, Danielle attended University of London, King’s College & London School of Economics, where she earned an LL.M. in Public International Law. She began her legal career at the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in London, advising clients and providing counsel on refugee and immigration law. Danielle then focused on international human rights in Gjakova, Kosovo, giving voice to victims of crime and sexual assault. For the last 16 years, Danielle has pursued a career in prosecution, first at the Criminal Division of the San Diego City Attorney’s Office, working in the domestic violence and child abuse unit, and now as a Deputy District Attorney, working with victims to ensure they have a voice in the pursuit of justice. She is extremely grateful for this position, as community service is engrained in the culture of the office.

Throughout the course of her legal career, Danielle’s community service efforts have focused on outreach to disadvantaged youth, including girls at risk and diverse communities. For over a decade, Danielle has been involved with, and currently serves on the Board of, San Diego Youth Services, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of homeless, runaway, abused, and at-risk youth and their families. Through a variety of services and programs, San Diego Youth Services teaches youth the skills they need to support themselves. Moreover, in an effort to foster diversity and promote equal access to justice, Danielle actively works with community leaders, professional organizations, private and public sector attorneys, and members of the judiciary. Through her service, Danielle yearns to show youth that there is a better future available with the right education, mentoring and support.

In the years since first joining Lawyers Club, Danielle has served on numerous committees to advance the Lawyers Club mission. From 2009 to 2012, Danielle served on the Board of Directors of Lawyers Club, serving as Secretary and Vice President. She continues to remain active on several committees, including the Bylaws and Policies, Membership, and Community Outreach Committees.

Danielle participates in many other professional organizations that advance the status of women, including the San Diego Domestic Violence Council, the San Diego Teen Court / Justice Project, and the National Association of Women Judges, where she played an integral part in the public relations and marketing aspects of the 2014 national conference held in San Diego. She has also volunteered with the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program’s Women’s Resource Fair. A respected leader in town, Danielle serves on the Board of Directors and as a Vice President of the San Diego County Bar Association.

Danielle’s dedication to helping those without a voice is inspirational and has greatly served to improve the status of women and to promote equality. We are honored to present Danielle Hickman with the 2015 Community Service Award.
