At the May 12, 2015 Annual Dinner, we presented the C. Hugh Friedman New Lawyer Award to Rebecca Zipp.

2015 Rebecca Zipp

Rebecca Zipp is a criminal prosecutor, Co-Chair of Lawyers Club’s Reproductive Rights & Women’s Advocacy Committee (RRWAC), Chair of the Coalition for Reproductive Choice, and a mother of two boys under the age of five. Rebecca’s professional accomplishments and dedication to community service make her a fitting recipient of the C. Hugh Friedman New Lawyer Award. As a Deputy District Attorney for seven years, Rebecca is an experienced trial attorney and a committed advocate for victims. She is currently assigned to a trial team in San Diego Superior Court, where she prosecutes felony cases ranging from “low-level” narcotics to violent crimes, including murder. Being in trial regularly suits Rebecca, who believes that the best way to learn is by doing and appreciates that her rigorous trial schedule hones her advocacy skills. In 2012, Mothers Against Drunk Driving recognized Rebecca as Outstanding Prosecutor of the Year, in recognition of her diligent pursuit of justice and sensitivity to the rights of victims. Rebecca is also conscious that as a woman in the D.A.’s office, she has a special role relative to both the women who came before her and those who will follow.

Rebecca is raising her sons to be feminists; they have already seen Gloria Steinem speak at Congregation Beth Am and attended a Planned Parenthood rally featuring reproductive justice activist Sandra Fluke. Rebecca reflects that having children really made her examine how she spends her increasingly precious time. Ultimately, she decided to focus on the issue about which she is most passionate: reproductive choice.

Rebecca’s ardent support for reproductive choice is rooted in her belief that it is a human rights and equality issue. It was this deep passion that led Rebecca to her service as the Lawyers Club’s liaison to the Coalition for Reproductive Choice. Rebecca, who had already served over two years with the CRC, assumed the role as Chair in March 2015. Rebecca also co-chaired RRWAC’s screening of “Invisible War,” a documentary about sexual violence in the military, and helped organize Lawyers Club’s screening of a documentary about Anita Hill at California Western School of Law.

Rebecca is dedicated to building her reputation as a tenacious prosecutor, and to promoting the Lawyers Club mission. Lawyers Club is honored to present Rebecca Zipp with the 2015 Lawyers Club C. Hugh Friedman Award.
