Belva Lockwood Award
Share |

Lawyers Club established the Belva Lockwood Award in 1985 to recognize members whose contributions to the organization are outstanding. The award is named for Belva Anne Lockwood (1830-1917), who devoted her life to improving the social, economic and political status of women and to advocating equality for all.

About Belva Ann Lockwood
Her career was a series of firsts, including being the first woman attorney to be admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court (in 1879) and other federal courts, and the first woman to run for the office of President of the United States (in 1884 and 1888). Lawyers Club salutes Belva Lockwood’s personal courage and commitment to equality and is proud to honor her memory with this award. Read more...

Recipients of the Lawyers Club of San Diego Belva Lockwood Award:

2017 Nadia Bermudez
Nadia P. Bermudez holds the distinctions of having been both one of the longest serving and one of the youngest presidents of Lawyers Club.

Bermudez served as President of Lawyers Club from 2008-2009, but her term was extended by several months when her predecessor, Judge Katherine Bacal, was appointed to the Superior Court for the County of San Diego. As President of Lawyers Club, Bermudez successfully pressed for the Board to join in an amicus brief with other women bar associations in Strauss v. Horton , challenging the validity of California’s unlawful Proposition 8. She also wrote extensively on opposing parental consent anti-choice legislation.
Prior to serving as President, Bermudez served as chair of Lawyers Club’s 35th Anniversary Annual Dinner and as co-chair of the Diverse Women’s Committee. Bermudez has also served on Lawyers Club’s Advisory Board.

Recently, Bermudez was selected to lead California La Raza Lawyers Association and organize the state’s various Latino bar associations and monitor the appointment of Latinos and Latinas to the bench. She is also a founding member of Run Women Run, a political action committee seeking to expand opportunities and support for pro-choice women candidates, and she currently serves on the Hispanic National Bar Association’s Latina Commission, dedicated to the advancement of Latinas in the legal profession. As Shareholder at Klinedinst PC, she practices employment litigation, counseling, and general business litigation. Bermudez is married to attorney Sergio Feria, whose positive outlook on life is a loving check against the stresses of lawyering. Bermudez, a Padres fan, enjoys time with her son Samuel, and spending time as a team mom for the Chula Vista American Little League.
