Community Service Award

Lawyers Club established the Community Service Award in 1985 to honor a Lawyers Club member whose local community activities have served to improve the status of women and to promote equality.

Recipients of the Lawyers Club of San Diego Community Service Award:

2018 Johanna Schiavoni

Elevating women by recognizing their needs in society and advancing their unique contributions to public discourse and leadership has been a primary focus of Johanna Schiavoni’s service to our community and the legal profession.

Since her early days in Lawyers Club, she focused on increasing women’s leadership on boards and commissions, and in elected and appointed office. As President of Lawyers Club, she recruited a diverse set of committee chairs and mentored many through terms on the Board or in other leadership positions. In her two years as Co-Chair of Lawyers Club’s Fund for Justice, the Fund raised and granted record amounts to local nonprofits focused on supporting women and girls.

Schiavoni also put her legal skills to work in other settings. In 2009, she became a founding member of Women Give San Diego—a donor circle that grants funds to local nonprofits focused on women’s economic self-sufficiency. She helped develop its advocacy program, training members and traveling to Sacramento to lobby for state budget priorities focused on women and families.

In 2011, Schiavoni co-founded a local civic leadership training nonprofit, the San Diego Leadership Alliance, which runs an intensive 6-month leadership institute. Since then, the organization has built an active network of nearly 200 young leader alumni.

Schiavoni, who runs her own appellate litigation firm, was elected in 2016 to the San Diego County Bar Association’s Board. She has served as its Treasurer and as the inaugural Chair of the Public Positions Advisory Group, and she consistently advocates for a more diverse and inclusive legal profession.

Schiavoni’s effectiveness, strategic thinking, and dedication to the community have drawn notice from local political leaders, too. In 2013, Interim Mayor Todd Gloria appointed Schiavoni to the City’s Balboa Park Committee. Recently she was appointed by Mayor Kevin Faulconer to a position on the nine-member Board overseeing the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, where she continues to serve the community and inspire others with her civic leadership.
