In recognition of their lifelong commitment to improving the status of women, in 2012 Lawyers Club presented the Icon Award to Hon. Judith McConnell and Hon. Lynn Schenk.

Justice Judith McConnell
A founding member of Lawyers Club and its first president, Administrative Presiding Justice Judith McConnell obtained both a bachelor’s degree and law degree from University of California, Berkeley. She began her legal career as a trial attorney at the State of California Department of Transportation, entered private practice, and then was appointed to the bench, serving as a judge of both the San Diego Municipal Court and San Diego County Superior Court. She was the first female justice in San Diego to become the Presiding Justice for the Court of Appeal, Fourth Appellate District, Division One.
Justice McConnell has received many accolades, including but not limited to the Bernard E. Witkin Award from the Law Library Justice Foundation in 2005 and Jurist of the Year by the California Judicial Council in 2001. She was the first recipient of the Benjamin Aranda Access to Justice Award presented jointly by the California Judicial Council, the California Judges Association and the State Bar of California. In 2007, the Chief Justice appointed her to the Commission for Impartial Courts. She currently chairs the Leadership Group for Civic Education. In 2005, the Supreme Court elected her to the Commission on Judicial Performance, an independent state agency responsible for judicial discipline, where she served as chair from 2009 to 2012.

Hon. Lynn Schenk
A founding member of Lawyers Club and its second President, Schenk’s early career was as in-house staff counsel for San Diego Gas & Electric. In 1976, she received a prestigious position as a White House Fellow and later worked as a special assistant to Vice Presidents Nelson A. Rockefeller and Walter F. Mondale. California Governor Jerry Brown subsequently appointed Schenk as Deputy Secretary for the California Department of Business, Transportation and Housing, and later appointed her as the first woman Secretary of the Department. In 1992 Schenk won the Democratic nomination to run for Congress from California's 49th congressional district, becoming the first woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent the San Diego area. She later served on the Governor’s cabinet and became the first woman Chief of Staff to California Governor Gray Davis.  Schenk has been actively involved in the San Diego community, as a Commissioner and Vice-Chair of the Board of San Diego Unified Port District, and on numerous boards and commissions including San Diego Symphony and the Red Cross. She is a director of Biogen, a trustee of The Scripps Research Institute, a member of the California High Speed Rail Authority, and a member of the University of San Diego School of Law Board of Visitors. In 2012, she was inducted into San Diego County’s Women’s Hall of Fame as a "Trailblazer.”
